  • Are Moldavites Radioactive?

Moldavites aren’t radioactive, how is moldavite formed. However, this question is something I am often asked. Let’s debunk the myth about Moldavites being radioactive and prove that they can be safely handled.

Moldavites formed from the melting of sediments (clays, sands and rocks) after an impact with a large asteroid. Moldavites were formed when melted fragments flew through space, scattering them across the Czech Republic. Fluvial activity caused these fragments to flow through the air, and settle as sediments we now see. You can find more information in the How Moldavites formed article.

The impact site of the Asteroid was completely free from radioactive substances such as uranium. You can find the exact chemical formula for Moldavites in this book.

Is it possible that the Moldavites were irradiated after the impact?

The impact site and neither the sediments contain radioactive material. Central Europe has never been the site of any nuclear weapon testing. It is therefore impossible to emit radiation.

    Theoretical intro

Radiation and ionizing radiation form an integral part of our daily lives. The invisible rays are literally interwoven with the world around us.

One sievert [Sv] refers to a derived unit for one dose of ionizing radiation. The equivalent dose of Sv.s-1 is used to measure the radiation’s duration.

Here are some examples of equivalent doses for humans

X-ray of the arm 1 uSv

X-ray of the chest 20 uSv

Airplane flight (4000 km) 40 uSv

In a nuclear power station, engineer 0,4 mSv/year

The Dukovany nuclear power plant provides 0,005 mSv/year to the population living around it.

    Digestive process of banana 0,1mSv

The risk of developing cancer is increased by taking a lower yearly dose.
